I Do Pop 'Cause That's What My Heart Goes

My last intersection with the Capital Idea! Festival was The Russian Futurists at Zaphod's. While this show was nothing earth-shattering, it was the enjoyable night that I was anticipating.

When I arrived, The Liar's Rosebush was already at work, although I think that I caught the majority of this opening set. Rosebush is the performing name of Matt Rosen, who certainly seemed capable working behind his turntables and engaging the early arrivals in the crowd, although his music never really connected with me. The same was true of the second act of the night, Parts and Labor. While the Brooklyn trio's rock sound was more to my taste and they played hard and loud, I didn't get a lot out of their set.

While The Russian Futurists is another one-man project on album, for the live show, Matthew Adam Hart had four musicians backing him up. With one man behind an electronic drum kit and the rest starting behind keyboards or synthesizers, it was definitely a night for clean pop sounds, a trend that didn't change when some songs employed electric guitar. While I only knew one of the three Futurists albums, the songs that I didn't know came across as catchy as the ones that I did. In fact, "Precious Metals" was perhaps my favourite of the night, even though I had never heard it before.

Hart's singing was as clean as the rest of the music and he was a joker on stage, at one point noting that it was the drummer's first show and he was ready to fire him if he screwed up. The band only left itself 45 minutes to work with before the Zaphod's curfew but they managed to fit a dozen songs in a set that emphasized how concise Hart's output tends to be. By the time that The Russian Futurists wrapped up with "It's Not Really Cold When it Snows," they had delivered a satisfying show.
